Turn your Brevo audience into a referral program

Your next referral invitation can start with an audience you already know. A list of repeat buyers, for example, gives you a group of customers who have chosen your brand more than once—and may have someone in mind to recommend it to.

The ReferralCandy integration with Brevo lets you bring that audience into your referral program. Import contacts from a Brevo list or segment, give each advocate a personal referral link in your emails, and follow up as they participate.

The integration is rolling out gradually.

Choose your first audience

You can import all your Brevo contacts, a single list, or a single segment. ReferralCandy imports contacts with an email address and enrolls them as advocates in your referral campaigns. First and last names come across when they’re set in Brevo.

That gives you a practical way to start small. Choose a group whose relationship with your brand makes the invitation relevant, review their experience, and expand from there.

Each import runs when you click Sync now. Your audience selection applies to that run only, so choose the list or segment again when you next import. Larger audiences take time to process in the background; repeat imports update existing contacts without creating duplicates.

Once connected with the required read and write access, ReferralCandy writes each advocate’s personal link back to Brevo. It creates a contact attribute for every campaign, named RC_REFERRAL_LINK_<CAMPAIGN SHORT CODE>, and sets REFERRALCANDY_ADVOCATE to true so you can identify program participants in Brevo segments.

For a campaign with the short code fren, the link attribute is RC_REFERRAL_LINK_FREN. You can insert it into a Brevo email with:

{{ contact.RC_REFERRAL_LINK_FREN }}

Use your own campaign’s attribute name. Brevo’s contact-attribute personalization also lets you put the link behind a button. Preview with a synced contact and check that the expected link appears before sending.

A newsletter footer is one place to start: explain who might enjoy your products, invite the customer to share, and include their link. Their recommendation gives the invitation its meaning; the link makes it easy to act on.

Follow up on participation

ReferralCandy sends referral activity to Brevo as real-time events. You build the automations and choose the messages that follow.

Three useful starting points are:

A detected purchase may still be pending, so use the reward-earned event for a message promising an earned reward. Events can also occasionally arrive more than once. Configure your automation so a repeat delivery doesn’t send the same reward notification again.

Enroll contacts when they join a list

Turn on Real-time sync to keep enrolling contacts as they’re added to Brevo lists. ReferralCandy creates and manages the webhook—the connection that tells it when a list addition happens—and writes the new advocate’s link back to Brevo.

Real-time sync covers list additions only. Someone who newly matches a segment won’t be picked up through this connection alone. Import that segment again when you want to bring its members into ReferralCandy.

The API key needs permission to manage webhooks, and each contact needs an email address. Disabling real-time sync removes the managed webhook from Brevo.

Decide who sends each email before importing

Connecting Brevo leaves ReferralCandy’s campaign emails enabled. Newly enrolled advocates can receive the Welcome email and any other ReferralCandy emails you have switched on.

You can keep ReferralCandy’s referral emails running while Brevo handles newsletters and other campaigns. If Brevo will replace a referral message, first turn off the matching email under Campaigns → your campaign → Emails in ReferralCandy. Repeat for each active campaign before your first import.

ReferralCandy supplies the attributes and events; you configure the messages Brevo sends. Disconnecting Brevo won’t switch ReferralCandy emails back on for you.

Connect Brevo

  1. Create a Brevo v3 API key with contacts read and write access. Use Get API key on ReferralCandy’s Brevo integration screen, or follow Brevo’s API-key guide. Include webhook access if you want real-time sync.
  2. In ReferralCandy, go to Integrations → Brevo, paste the key into API key, and click Connect.
  3. Review your campaign email settings. Under Import contacts → Import from list or segment, choose All contacts, a list, or a segment, then click Sync now.
  4. Add the campaign-specific referral-link attribute to your Brevo email and preview it with a synced contact.
  5. Optionally click Enable under Real-time sync to enroll contacts as they’re added to lists.
