ReferralCandy vs UpPromote: What Merchants Told Me

"Do you happen to have a comparison of features of ReferralCandy vs UpPromote?"

A merchant asked our support team that question directly, and I didn't have a good answer to send them. So I went back through 22 conversations where merchants brought up UpPromote on demos, in support chats, and in interviews, and I wrote down what they actually said. Quotes below are lightly edited for clarity and anonymized. One is translated from Spanish.

What struck me is how consistent the conversations were. Merchants running affiliates on UpPromote kept booking calls with us for the same two reasons: a referral motion their affiliate tool couldn't really carry, and a list of day-to-day frictions they'd stopped mentioning to anyone because they assumed that was just how the software worked.

The referral gap is real work, not a missing feature

The clearest description came from a merchant running affiliates on UpPromote who wanted a proper refer-a-friend program too. Translated from Spanish:

The programs are very similar. And it's true that with UpPromote we can do the referral side, but we have to keep watching it, you know? Cancelling commissions.

That line is worth sitting with. UpPromote can approximate a referral program. The cost is that his team becomes the enforcement layer, manually policing which commissions should exist.

Other merchants described the same seam from different angles. One asked us: "At the moment we're using UpPromote for managing affiliate links. Is your platform able to do this as well, or only referral?" When I confirmed we do both, the reply was three words: "Looking to consolidate."

Another, rebuilding on Shopify Hydrogen, wanted both motions covered at once and asked whether we provide "the same features as UpPromote's standard affiliate commission, and customer referrals." And one merchant was sitting on a Facebook community of about 20,000 customers while her affiliate tool had nothing to offer them:

We have a lot of folks that are very dedicated customers right now that are just, on their own, giving out reps to others. We want to give back to those women who are sharing so freely.

Affiliates promote to an audience and expect a commercial relationship. Customers recommend out of trust, and the tooling should reward that without a commissions spreadsheet behind it. Merchants feel that difference before any vendor explains it to them. An affiliate-first tool asks you to fake the second motion with the mechanics of the first, and the merchants quoted above all ran into some version of that wall.

The frictions merchants reported on UpPromote

These came up unprompted, usually as the reason the merchant started looking around.

Affiliates can't mint their own codes. One merchant wanted affiliates to "create discount coupons as they wish," and said UpPromote didn't offer that.

Languages. A store selling in French and Spanish told us: "I'm currently using UpPromote but it doesn't meet my needs. Our website is in French and Spanish."

Headless builds. "I'm rebuilding my entire site on Hydrogen, and I'm using the UpPromote app now, but there is no way to integrate it with Hydrogen. So I'm looking for a solution which works in Hydrogen."

The marketplace. An agency evaluating it for a client was unmoved: "They don't bring their network either. They might have a marketplace, but it's not connected to the affiliate program per se."

Attribution. One merchant carried a question from their own partners: "With regular affiliate programs, conversions can get overwritten if the user later clicks a Google ad. Would that happen here too?" That worry follows merchants from tool to tool, and it's a fair test to put to every vendor, including us.

None of these is dramatic on its own. Together they explain why merchants who describe their affiliate program as "working" still end up on a call comparing alternatives.

How merchants actually shop in this category

Two conversations stuck with me because they weren't about features at all.

One merchant walked me through how she picks apps in the Shopify App Store. She skips the sponsored slots on principle, UpPromote's included, and reads reviews for mid-sized companies:

If a company is too big, you're just a number. It's hard to get tech support. With the smaller companies, where you're chatting with someone or you have an onboarding specialist, you really do get that personalized service.

Another, evaluating for large retail brands, had ReferralCandy and UpPromote on the same shortlist as Impact and CJ, with a possible Q4 test behind it. At that scale the comparison set changes completely, and app-store polish matters less than who shows up during the pilot.

Different buyers, same lesson: the feature table rarely decides this. Support responsiveness, setup friction, and whether the tool matches the motion you're actually running decide it.

Where ReferralCandy is actually different

The comparison merchants expect is affiliate tool versus referral tool. That framing is out of date.

ReferralCandy runs affiliate programs outright, with a suite of tools for affiliates and influencers. If affiliates are your only program today, you don't need to wait for a referral motion to justify the switch. The merchants quoted above weren't asking us to replace affiliate management with something else. They were asking whether they could keep it and stop working around its gaps.

The real difference is that customer referrals live beside the affiliate program as their own motion, with their own rewards logic. Nobody cancels commissions by hand to make a refer-a-friend offer behave. When the merchant with 20,000 customers trading her product in a Facebook group is ready to reward them, the program is already in the account, waiting.

So who should pick which

If you're brand new with no customer base yet, start with affiliates. Partners bring an audience, and ReferralCandy runs that program from day one. Add customer referrals as happy customers accumulate, without adopting a second tool to do it.

If you're on UpPromote and any of the frictions above sound familiar, or you're approximating referrals with affiliate mechanics and manually cancelling commissions to make it behave, that's exactly the moment merchants come to us.

And if you already have both motions running in separate places, consolidation is the quiet win. One account, both programs, each treated as what it actually is.

The merchants who move from UpPromote to ReferralCandy come to consolidate and to stop doing the software's job for it. The program grew a second motion, and they would rather run both from one place than keep watching commissions by hand.
